Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze After Diwali

On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of Delhi showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals ten times the safe limit established by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than healthy limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly pollution that blankets the city as colder weather begins.

Yet recently, the recently formed regional leadership approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, the court complied with the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during limited hours throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Many recording stations throughout the capital recorded pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing declining air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the festivities.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the city have persisted as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around Diwali, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever documented in China's capital, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and haze from farm burning in neighbouring regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing toxic haze that then gets trapped over the city as colder air sets in.

Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 untimely fatalities annually in the capital.
