Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
